What Is a World Cup Knockout Bracket?
The FIFA World Cup knockout bracket is the single-elimination stage of the tournament where every match must produce a winner. Beginning with the Round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup format, teams compete in direct elimination matches. A loss means elimination, while a win advances a team to the next round. The bracket provides a clear path from 32 teams to one champion and allows fans to predict every stage of the tournament before the first knockout match begins.
How Knockout Rounds Work
Unlike the group stage, knockout football offers no second chances. Each match determines which team advances and which team goes home. Teams are placed into a predetermined bracket based on their group-stage finishing positions. Winners continue advancing through the rounds until only two teams remain in the World Cup Final. This format creates some of the most dramatic moments in football because every match can end a team's tournament.

Extra Time and Penalty Shootout Rules
Knockout matches cannot end in a draw. If teams are level after 90 minutes, the match proceeds to 30 minutes of extra time. If the score remains tied after extra time, a penalty shootout determines the winner. Each team takes five penalties initially, and if still tied, the shootout continues one kick at a time until a winner emerges. These rules ensure that every knockout match produces an advancing team.
Prediction Tips for Your Bracket
When building your bracket, consider more than just team reputation. Recent form, squad depth, injuries, tactical matchups, and tournament experience can all influence results. Knockout matches are often tighter than group-stage games, meaning one goal can decide an entire tournament run. Successful predictions usually balance favorites with a few carefully selected upsets.
